System Administrator, Aug 1997 – till date

Worked as system administrator on a Solaris Platform 7 & 2.6 – NIS, NFS, and DNS. Maintained E250, SunBlade100 servers.

Specific responsibilities included:

Installing and maintaining the NIS master and slave servers, NFS servers with automount clients, DNS Server. Configuration of groups and users; enabling high-end security based secure-ids for all users to log on to the server at various centers.

Implemented stand-alone installation, file system management, backups, process control, user administration and device management of sun workstations in a networked environment. Installing and maintaining of Sun systems, configuration and trouble shooting of network file system (NFS) environment and network information server (NIS) environment,

Performed: Hardware upgrades (Memory, CD-ROM, Network Interface Cards, Hard drives, etc. Interacted with customers and end-users to resolve their problems in a timely and accurate manner. Also, trained users on system usage and commands,

Specific responsibilities included the following:

Installed and Configured:   Installed and configured Exceed on Windows NT machines. Configured Ethernet and Serial Ports.

Account Management: User accounts – adding / removing / retiring / unretiring / locking or unlocking a user account. User Groups – changing user’s login group; adding or changing groups; Password – changing a user password or password parameters.

 File System Management: Adding new file system; permitting user to mount file system; monitoring free space, disk usage, blocks by owner; locating files, checking & clearing log files; administration and monitoring of disk based file system, virtual file system, the cache file system, the temporary file system (TMPFS), the process file system (PROCFS), the virtual file system table (/etc/vfstab); and creation of an entry in the file system table;

Mounting & Unmounting: Finding the mounted file system; mounting all file systems in the /etc/vfstab file; mounting a single file system; unmounting all remote file systems (umountall –F nfs), unmounting individual file systems (umount); sharing files from a server; checking the data consistency of a file system (fsck); finding out whether a file system needs checking; and file system checking on an interactive basis;

Administering Network Services: Checking remote system status; determining how long a remote system has been up; determining whether a remote system is up, logging into a remote system and transferring files between systems.

Administering Systems: Determining system-specific information; determining the host-id number, hardware type, processor type, OS release, system configuration information, how long a system has been up (uptime); setting the system date & time, and changing the system TIME ZONE, and configuring additional swap space.

File System & Disk Administration: Setting hard links and symbolic links, character devices, block devices, disk partition, slice & format, and repairing file systems with fsck;

NFS Administration: Administering NFS file sharing; checking remote procedure calls, NFS Daemons, setting up the NFS Servers and NFS Clients, and starting / stopping NFS Services;

SOLARIS System Monitoring: Monitoring system status & monitoring the processes identify system bottlenecks and balance system loads.

SOLARIS Memory Management: Monitoring memory utilization and performance.

Monitoring Disk Performance: Disk I/O performance optimization; checking disk performance & monitoring file system use.

Monitoring CPU Performance: Monitoring multiprocessor performance.

Backup & Restore: backing up using Tar, ufsdump & ufsrestore.

Monitoring Network Performance: Monitoring network performance with, spray, nfsstat –c, netstat; looking for network data corruption with netstat –s.

Kernel Tuning: Checking Kernel tables, system tables with sar –v; checking tunable Kernel parameters; modifying the configuration information file; checking the maxusers parameter; and checking parameters that influence paging & swapping;

Security Management: Encrypting sensitive data (users data, application data); protecting files by restricting their permissions; building the strategy of changing user passwords periodically etc.;

DNS installation and configuration: Designed a two-tier domain model with primary and secondary name servers,

NIS (Yellow Pages) Environment Configuration: Installation and configuration of master and slave and clients;

Monitoring the System: Monitoring the system on a regular basis and optimizing performance; maintaining the network; and monitoring networks performance.

Performed Hardware upgrades (Memory, CD-ROM, Network Interface Cards, Hard drives, etc. Interacted with customers and end-users to resolve their problems in a timely and accurate manner. Also, trained users on system usage and commands,

Involved in installation and configuration of Windows NT. Specific responsibilities included the following:

Installed operating system. Setup, Maintain and manage the User Accounts.

Involved in all aspects of LAN planning, administration and troubleshooting, and backup strategy planning and implementation. Assisted in network design and layout for the TCP/IP network.
